We have an excellent opportunity available for anyone who has worked in
Pharmaceutical (Preformulation, Formulation, Analytical) R&D departments in
the West for a substantial part of his/ her career.. We are setting up a
greenfield contract P-R&D center in Ahmedabad in an SEZ with a 4th year
target of 400 people (first year = 100 people), catering to pharmaceutical
development services, catering to short term projects from international
clients only (SEZs are zones set up for export work). The group will
conduct preformulation, formulation developent, clinical manufacturing,
stability studies, etc. etc., but will not work on manufacture of any
large-scale batches (equipment will be for small-scale manufacturing and
development activities, and almost all solid dosage forms only for the
first year or so). The site will house formulation and analytical
laboratories and GMP pilot plants. The next six months will focus
on completing the labs and recruiting, and operations are targeted to start
1Q09. The position is open now and a suitable candidate to head the site
and the entire R&D group is needed.
We are looking for a candidate who would ideally have approx.
ten plus years of experience, good exposure to formulations, with both
hands-on and managerial experience, understanding of clinical regulatory
filing requirements (IND filings), understanding of analytical needs to
support formulation development, excellent leadership and communication
abilities to talk to international (mostly U.S. / EU based large pharma)
clients and to lead such a large group with vision and by example. Most
importantly, the candidate must have the hunger to build and grow a great
business offering which delivers on client’ expectations. Compensation and
designation will be as per market norms and candidate’s ability and
experience. If the candidate has already had a long stint once and is
currently a consultant in this space, but is very keen to pursue a second
career now, he/she may also apply. This may be a superb and exciting
opportunity to achieve great things in a very short period. The person
will have a lot of freedom and opportunity to exploit his/her adminstrative
skills also as the site head of such a 100+ people operation in the first
year. Although this is a permanent position, for the suitable candidate, an
appropriate offering can be created (for example a three or four year
contract, opportunity to spend five months here, a month there, etc., etc).

Ahmedabad is a splendid city, currently among India’s top ten) with superb
infrastructure (great wide roads!), affordable large area housing, some of
India’s best schools and colleges (IIM, NID, etc.), and a much lower cost
of living relative to Mumbai, Pune, etc.. In addition, the Gujarat state
government is investing heavily to put it on the map as “the city to be
in”. In three years, ahmedabad may become the best Indian city to live in.
It is about 40 minutes by flight from Mumbai and has some of India’s major
pharmaceutical houses.
